Compared to natural mined diamonds, lab-grown diamonds offer an appealing alternative for the conscious consumer. Lab diamonds, also known as cultured or manufactured diamonds, are created in a controlled and tightly regulated laboratory environment using advanced technology and innovative scientific processes.
Given their origin, lab diamonds have a far less harmful environmental impact than mined diamonds. They do not cause ecological disruption to any land surface, for example, deforestation and have no long-term effect on pollution or wildlife. Lab diamonds are partly created with renewable energy and leave behind minimal emissions, resulting in little-to-no harm to our planet and society. Lab diamonds also do not require water unlike mined diamonds and therefore there’s no risk of water pollution, acid mine drainage and seepage of mine waste into surface waters.
The production of lab-grown diamonds does require energy consumption, primarily for creating the necessary laboratory conditions and applying heat and pressure during the growth process. This energy consumption differs between the methods used to grow the diamonds, however, they all contribute to carbon emissions, although to a much lesser extent than the mining and extracting of natural diamonds.
